Spa headrests may be made from a variety of materials. The most common materials are polyurethane and the other is EVA which is a type of rubber.
Why are my spa headrests bubbling/peeling?
This type of "blistering" is typically caused by chemicals coming in direct contact with the headrests or adding chemicals and immediately putting the cover on so the gas vapours have nowhere to escape. It can also happen from leaving the headrests in the sun for extended periods of time.
The best way to protect your headrest is to make sure you use high-quality chemicals and do not overdose when sanitising and shocking. You should also dilute chemicals in a bucket of water before putting it into the spa. Lastly, you always want to make sure to keep the lid off your spa when applying chemicals until they have gone through their initial off gassing (about 5 to 10 minutes). This will save your spa cover and headrest.
